We propose workshops on a regular basis. Contact us to apply and know the dates.

A long time ago there were more than two hundred houses full of life in this mountain. Children grew up with animals, gardens grew in abundance. The harsh conditions and so-called "development", however, took everybody away since the 40's... Now, Serra da Malcata is mostly uninhabited, and Nature took Men's place in what was once a very strong interaction between the both... Here and there one can still see traces of this long gone human presence. We will show you how people used to live together closely, but also share its strong and beautiful nature with you. The scenery of the Serra da Malcata hill range is full of fauna, frequently one finds foxes, deer, boars, eagles and others predatory birds. The Reserva Natural da Serra da Malcata was created in 1981, aimed to save the Iberian Lynx from extinction, a task that  continues to be worked for.

Parts of this tour are better done walking. Of course, this is optional, but if you want to do so, please bring comfortable walking shoes

Autochthonous breeds

The animals reflect other times, in which farming had a very different role in society. They are the survivors of an era that will not come back. Four different breeds: goats (Cabra Charnequeira), sheep (Ovelha Churra do Campo), cows (Vaca Jarmelista) and dogs (Rafeiro do Alentejo). You'll be explained about their history, their ways of being, how they interact with each other and with humans, and we will explain the importance to take care of these ancient breeds. A great chance to learn about old farming...

Serra da Malcata

€45 per person (10:00-18:00)

A long time ago there were more than two hundred houses full of life in this mountain. Children grew up with animals, gardens grew in abundance. The harsh conditions and so-called "development", however, took everybody away since the 40's... Now, Serra da Malcata is mostly uninhabited, and Nature took Men's place in what was once a very strong interaction between the both... Sortelha Medieval Village

€45 per person (10:00-18:00)

Considered one of the most exceptional historical villages of Portugal, in Sortelha we'll be  able to see the old City Hall and Jail, a series of vernacular houses, mostly inside the Village Walls from the 13th century Castle. Sortelha, due to i's remote location and slow development during the last 2 centuries, kept itself very pure inside the walls.A medieval atmosphere remained, that is hard to find elsewhere.

Olive oil mills - ancient milling tradition

€45 per person (10:00-18:00)

Not so long ago, more than 4000 olive oil mills were working in the Centre and North of Portugal. Just a few were kept for us to testify the amazing techniques used ever since the Romans started producing oil. Machines either driven by cows or water,, were amazingly constructed to obtain the most of the precious fruit.

Quinta da Bazágueda - Step back in time...

€25 per person (9:00-13:00)

Do not expect to find a fancy farm in this so fashionable today stream of made for the public "authentic" places. Here, the time stopped when people start abandoning the mountains. A few survivors kept the farm going, as you can see by its extremely rustic looks. A great chance to learn about old farming, cheese making and natural building...

Monsanto

€45 per person (10:00-18:00)

Monsanto speaks for itself as it was elected the ‘most portuguese’ of the portuguese villages already in 1940. Idanha-a-Velha was one of the most important cities in the Visigotic times with a imposing Cathedral proving it and Penha Garcia has a relatively well preserved Contal Castle from the 12th century. However, we will show you other sides of both towns, and tell you historic details that you will not find in the general guide books.
