About us

Marta & Fernando, your hosts.

Marta, born in 1989 in the North of Portugal, studied social work in Porto and has been involved in cultural and social volunteer projects in Portugal and Luxembourg before moving to Penamacor. Marta's vision is to live in harmony with all that surrounds her, involving the wild, the nature, the farm animals, the landscape and her family and friends in an healthy relation for the well being of all.

Fernando, born in 1980 in Covilhã, Centre of Portugal, lived his first months in Penamacor, moved to Setúbal as a child, and lived in Aveiro during his school years. In Coimbra, he studied Physics. Throughout l his life he would often visit Quinta da Bazágueda, Penamacor, where his origins lay since at least the 18th century. His connection to the mountains is very deep, feeling honoured to live in such an amazing place.

Marta and Fernando both aim for a reasonably sustainable life where traditional knowledge and old know-how play a crucial role. Very proudly they have in their farm three breeds of autochthonous and almost extinct animals: sheep "Churra do Campo", goat "Charnequeira" and cow "Jarmelista". All of this animals are extremely rustic and adapted to the soil and climate conditions, where they live truly free range. It's an honour, as much as a responsibility, to take care of these animals in such a demanding world of contemporary farming.

Quinta da Bazágueda is located inside the Natural Reserve of "Serra da Malcata". It's an ancient farm crossed by Bazágueda river - hence its name -, with dams for irrigation and providing energy for the mills.

That's why we are here: In memory of all those who over generations, tamed, cared and loved these almost forgotten mountains.
