A long time ago there were more than two hundred houses full of life in this mountain. Children grew up with animals, gardens and a full life. The harsh conditions and the so called "development" took everybody away, since the 40's... Now, Serra da Malcata is mostly inhabited, and Nature took Men's place in what was once a very strong interaction of both... You can still see traces of this long gone human presence here and there. The scenery of the Serra da Malcata hill range is full of fauna, where frequently you can observe foxes, deer, boars, eagles and others birds of prey. The Reserva Natural da Serra da Malcata was created in 1981, aimed to save the Iberian Linx from extinction, task that is still on going.
